Beef stroganoff is a classic Russian dish that is made with juicy sirloin beef and a creamy mushroom sauce. Serve it over egg noodles or rice for a quick and easy dinner that is ready in under 30 minutes.
Beef stroganoff seems fancy, but it's actually a budget-friendly meal that is very easy to make. People will think you slaved over the oven for hours when in reality this dish comes together in less than 30 minutes. Since it cooks quickly, it's best to have all of your ingredients out and ready before you start cooking.
How to Make Beef Stroganoff:
Ingredients:
- Olive oil
- Beef sirloin: You can use ground beef sirloin that is 90% lean, which is what I typically use, or sirloin steak sliced into thin strips.
- Salt & pepper
- Chopped onions
- Mushrooms: Use baby Bella or white mushrooms and slice them somewhat thicker, about ¼" thick. Before cooking with mushrooms always rinse and wipe off any dirt with a clean paper towel.
- Minced garlic
- Flour
- Beef broth
- Heavy cream
- Chopped green onion or chopped parsley: To garnish
Directions:
- Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan. Add the chopped onions and ground beef. Season with salt and pepper and sauté, breaking apart the beef as you do, until the beef is cooked through. About 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Add a little more oil to the pan with the sliced mushrooms. Sauté for 5 minutes until soft. Add in the minced garlic and sauté an additional minute.
- Return the beef and onions to the pan and toss with the flour to coat evenly. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a boil. Simmer and stir constantly until the sauce thickens. About 5-7 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream.
- Garnish with chopped green onion or chopped parsley if desired and serve warm over egg noodles or rice.
